There are plenty of organizations for the Communication Professional but here are five that I have chosen that cater to the communication professional and have plenty of benefits to go along.
AEJMC – Association for Education in Journalism and
Mass Communication.
This
is a professional organization for educators and students in the mass
communication career field. Their
missions is to maintain high standards of journalistic and mass communication
education, helping to create the best future professionals and a “better
informed public”. Members enjoy network contacts and free subscriptions to the
associations many publications, including the bimonthly newsletter announcing
coveted job openings in the field. They also host a yearly professional
development conference to which its members are invited.
AMCP – Association of Marketing and Communication
Professionals.
This
organization consists of several thousand people and organizations who have
entered their works for the MarCom Awards. Hermes Creative Awards, and AVA
Digital Awards. This organization began in 1995 and part of its mission is they
foster and support the efforts of marketing and communication professionals who
contribute their unique talents to public service and charitable organizations.
They are acknowledged through grants and special recognition. This organization
was founded by a group of communication professionals who were involved in
competitions for several of the national and international trade organizations.
The goals was to provide an inexpensive, independent competition on an
international level that would be fair and open to everyone.
AWC – Association for Women in Communications.
This
is the one organization that recognizes the complex relationships that exist
across communications disciplines. Modern communicators must demonstrate
competence in varied disciplines and be able to network and make career moves
across the broad spectrum of communications fields. Disciplines represented within
the association include relations, marketing, graphic design, multi-media
design, and photography. The list is continually growing. This was founded in
1909 and was created to promote the advancement of women in all fields of
communications to work for the first amendment rights.
NCA – National Communication Association.
Dedicated
to fostering and promotion free and ethical communication, NCA promotes the
widespread appreciation of the importance of communication in public and
private life, the application of competent communication to improve the quality
of human life and relationships, and the use of knowledge about communication
to solve human problems. The NCA serves the scholars, teachers, and
practitioners who are its members by enabling and supporting their professional
interests in research and teaching.
LACP – League of American Communications
Professionals.
LACP
maintains discussion forums for professionals to discuss their best work and
provides public recognition for deserving professionals. Members receive a
monthly newsletter SPIN< which highlights tips and resources for best
practice. This membership includes email announcements about upcoming
competitions for various awards, and online subscriptions to various exclusive
research databases. They also receive a free subscription to the league’s
publication, PR Scope. Members can submit work proposals or campaign idea to
LACP for review and evaluation before pitching to clients or employers, in
order to perfect their performance.
These all sound very interesting and fun but the LACP
sounds most like the one I would join. I like the fact that you can submit
works for evaluation before pitching to a client. With me starting a new job in
this field I may need something like that in my future for sure. I will also
join the AWC because of the networking and may be able to help me find a job in
the near future.
