Peggy Hughes
CGD318: Public Relation Practices and Promotional Writing
September 22, 2015

Public relations is anything to do with people who are basically professional communicators. The purpose of public relations writing would be for a professional communicator who is very good at communicating through writing to be masters of all manner of written, spoken, and digital communications and knowing how to write is number one (Seitel, 2015).

Communicating the Truth about Genetically Modified Organisms September 19, 2015

 General Education Capstone Final

GMO’s Healthy or Unhealthy?
Who can we Believe?

In recent times, Genetically Modified Organisms are replacing our diet with genetically grown and altered food scientifically that we buy and eat from our stores every day. People who are trained as Genetically Modification Engineers, insert extracted genes from one living thing into the DNA of another living thing artificially to make new traits. This is done with the motivation to make the foods resists threats, grow bigger, grow faster, and produce more than the natural state of these foods can produce. More research is needed as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not conduct safety studies on these Genetically Modified foods and leaves this process up to the companies that are making and selling them (Smith, 2014). GMO’s can threaten our environment, land, our food security, and agricultural system as they are sprayed with very large amounts of herbicides that pollute our soil. These herbicides also get into our water systems and then into our foods (FAQs about GMO’s, 2015). Since Genetically Modified Foods are not yet labeled for the consumer when buying, and are impossible to produce in nature and only in a lab, it is questioned if these foods are healthy for us to consume on a daily basis.

Educating Others on the Importance of Global Citizenship August 20, 2015

Global Citizenship
It is our responsibility as Americans to recognize our role in educating others on global citizenship in everything that we do from our jobs, to social gatherings, volunteering, leading, and everyday interactions with others.  We need to see our responsibilities as active members of our global community to absorb, reflect, and share different points of view and roles within our global interconnected society today.

Communicating Bad News Tactfully and Effectively

December 17, 2015
Delivering Bad News Tactfully and Effectively

I believe at some point in all of our lives we will have to deliver some type of bad news tactfully and effectively on the job, even if we are not a big boss. In June of 2005 to October of 2009, I was actually a Manager for a local Best Buy store and had to deliver bad news to people a few times.
One of my employees, who was with the company for two years, is not performing as well or at a substandard level that I expect. I am receiving numerous complaints from customers on her attitude. Coworkers are not happy with her because she is very confrontational when spoken to by other employees and even at times with customers. After numerous complaints, I knew I had to do something about it. We will say that her name is Noel. Noel is 25 years old.

I am going to anticipate Noel to be very defensive and have somewhat of an attitude with me when I tell her of the complaints. I am first going to set up a private meeting with her in my office and I am also going to have one of my assistants in the room as a witness and backup if needed. It is always good to have a second person there for conversations like this so that you have someone to back up how things went down and what was said otherwise, it could be your word against hers.

Is Social Milieu Changing Cultural Behavior?

 June 3, 2015
Celebrations and Rituals of other Cultures
When a member of society undergoes a major important change in life, a rite of passage in all cultures is created and followed in the form of ceremonies such as christenings, puberty, rituals, marriages, funerals, and celebrations. Certain practices all help cultural anthropologists to become so familiar with diversity by seeing and studying which ways people of all cultures behave (Miner, 1956), and treat these important life changes. Cultural anthropologists believe that we are shaped by our culture and subcultures.  Today, due to a constant changing milieu, a rite of passage for Americans with a day off from work to witness it, yet the Presidential inauguration comes and goes giving Americans yet another opportunity not to care or even make time to witness it, whereas the Japanese culture for human life has significant rituals that they keep practicing today, even in a rapidly changing milieu.
